It started as a rumor until Gary Shaw, Alfredo Angulo’s promoter, confirmed it with Steve Kim from MaxBoxing that the hard-hitting Mexican just recently turned down $750,000 for a crack at middleweight champion Sergio Martinez- demanding a million bucks- and losing his shot at becoming the only boxer to appear on HBO three times in 2010.
HBO was guaranteeing Angulo a reappearance if he lost on HBO while the WBC was not going to penalize him and he’d still be number one at 154 pounds.
I can’t understand why “El Perro” will walk away with his tail between his legs on such opportunity. $750,000 is a lot of money considering he only made $350,000 in his last fight against Joachim Alcine. Demanding $1 million dollars is obviously without thought.
Sergio Martinez is a threat but $750K is well worth the risk and there is no shame in losing against a worthy opponent.
Hey, man... first off, thank you for the youtube channel, I don't know much about the two of you, but I know that I respect anyone with this level of boxing knowledge. I frequently talk smack (but not like some people with bad language and insults), but it is mostly about Sugar Ray Leonard (who I feel is the most overrated fighter of all time). Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for all that you do... I would love to sit down and pick your brain about the greats that you have seen and studied. Anyway, this thing about Angulo... thats pretty wild, I can't believe it (he doesn't seem like the type who would shrink away from a challenge, and Angulo has been one of my favorite fighters of the last year or two), but it just reaffirms for me the reason why I don't think there is any current fighter who can touch the legends of old. Its this type of attitude toward challenge and particularly losing that has really hurt our great sport, I know that people try to lay the blame at the fight of protective promoters and whatnot, but I think its at least partly the fault of the fighters. I know this, no one is going to keep me from taking a fight against a potential hall of famer. Win, lose, or draw... it would be an honor just to be in the same ring w/ an opponent of Martinez' caliber. Thank you again for all that you have done in keeping the great sport of boxing (and most importantly its ample history) in the forefront. Thank you again. RapedByRepublicans (on youtube, contact me if you ever wanna shoot the shit about the old fighters).
